From vegetation classification to ecosystem mapping, a wide diversity of wetland types and definitions exists, making the definition of a wetland ecosystem both challenging and controversial. This report makes a review of what has already been done in term of wetland ecosystem mapping in Europe, and especially regarding the modelisation of EUNIS habitats distribution and the use of remote sensing data for mapping wetland ecosystems. It is also providing an overview of the main classification systems to describe wetland ecosystems and the main links between them through an overall crosswalk file. Finally, the report provides some insights toward a shared and multifunctional map of European wetland and coastal ecosystems, based on common definitions and most recent data available.
