NRC on Resource efficiency and circular economy

Profile 2018 - 2020

Rationale

NRCs are requested to support and work with the EEA in the area of resource efficiency and circular economy.  This includes circular material use, environmental and socio-economic impacts, integrated environmental and economic accounting, sustainable business models and innovation – all from an integrated assessment perspective.  The EEA aims with NRCs to improve the knowledge, understanding and sharing of experience related to the systemic challenges to society related to the production and consumption systems and their efficiency of resource use and life-cycle environmental pressures.  Sharing of experience and providing insights into governance and institutional mechanisms - including concrete legislation, market based and other instruments  - to move towards a circular/green economy and resource efficiency is an integrated part of the work of the EEA and NRCs in this area. This work will include both indicators and integrated assessments.

A link to NRCs on waste can be ensured through joint sharing of information, webinars etc. Analytically and politically the link is very clear as a green and resource efficient European economy requires a more circular economy in which waste becomes a resource.
