Within the context of the European Green Deal (EGD) and the key policy initiatives (the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Zero Pollution Action Plan, the Farm to Fork Strategy), the environmental acquis on water, marine and biodiversity and the EEA/Eionet Strategy 2021-2030, the European Topic Centre on Inland, Coastal and Marine waters (ETC/ICM) will support Work Area 1 ‘Biodiversity and Ecosystems’ on

(1) Supporting policy implementation and sustainability transition,

(2) Providing input for solutions to sustainability challenges,

(3) Building stronger networks and partnerships, and

(4) Making use of the potential of data and digitalization.

In 2022, this will be done through the following activities:

  • Support reporting flows and state of the environment assessments through data, indicators and assessment work.
  • Support directive reviews and evaluation.
  • Support digitalization and information systems (WISE-Marine and WISE-Freshwater).
  • Support work on drivers of change (climate change, change in land/sea use, pollution, invasive alien species, over-exploitation of natural resources) and sectors (forestry, food systems (agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture)) through providing indicators, integrated assessments and digital products. Delivering actionable knowledge on whether drivers of change are meeting the European Green Deal ambitions, by informing on distance to target and robust response measures needed to meet the targets and support the transition to sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Support the protection and restoration targets for the freshwater and marine environment.
  • Provide support on the socio-economic dimension of sustainable management of natural resources.
  • Help maintain and establish partnership and networking activities that create added value and impact.
