Activities

The ETC/ICM primarily supports EEA Strategic Area (SA) 1: Informing policy implementation and, more specifically, project groups 1.5 Water management, resources and ecosystems and 1.6 Marine and coastal environment and maritime activities. This includes primarily the following:

  • Support the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Water Framework Directive, the Urban Waste Water Directive and the Bathing Water Quality Directive, and the assessment of the state of the environment through data, information and assessment work;
  • Support the ecosystem-based management approach to freshwater and marine policy domains, and with regard to other related domains such as biodiversity and climate change adaptation.

Specifically, the ETC/ICM Action Plan (AP) 2019 will group the work in areas that correspond to the respective projects in the EEA annual work programme (AWP) 2019 under 1.5 and 1.6.

Work on 1.5 Water management, resources and ecosystems in 2019 will focus on:

  • Supporting legally binding (UWWTD, BWD) data-flows and related EEA indicators,
  • Supporting publishing Core set indicators (CSI019, CSI020),
  • Supporting the work on water quantity and water quality accounts,
  • Supporting publishing the EEA Report on bathing water quality in 2018,
  • Supporting publishing the EEA Report on floodplains ecosystems,
  • Supporting progress work on synergies across EU directives, particularly with regard to diffuse sources of pollution (water and agriculture) and floodplains and ecosystem assessment.

Work on 1.6 Marine and coastal environment and maritime activities in 2019 will focus on:

  • Supporting the implementation of the MSFD, particularly with regard to the 2018 and 2019 MSFD data reporting, phase II of the WISE-Marine implementation plan and related EEA indicators,
  • Supporting publishing thematic assessments as ETC/ICM Technical reports (biodiversity, pressures and effects, sustainable use of European seas) and EEA Reports (eutrophication in Europe’s seas, Marine Messages II) contributing to the European Commission´s first evaluation report of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) under Article 20.3.b, and to the implementation of the wider policy context relevant for the sustainable use of Europe´s seas,
  • Supporting the delivery of contributions supporting the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy (specifically Target 2/Action 5),
  • Supporting progress work on maritime activities, blue economy and ocean governance.
